Whose Approval?

Galatians 1:10 “Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God?”

This is an important question to ask myself continually. Sometimes approval can be found at work in the form of raises, promotions, and recognition. But whose approval am I ultimately seeking to win? My choice reflects my priorities. It also reveals a direct conflict – the rest of the verse says, “If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.” These are stark words. One priority must necessarily dominate the other.

Father, I offer myself to you, to serve you and to put you first in all things. Please remind me when my thoughts, motivations, and actions are bent toward pleasing human beings and trying to win their approval. I am aware that this kind of motivation is subtle and has been evident in my life despite my self-perception that I am mostly immune to it. I am not immune. Please fill me with your Spirit today and empower me with your strength.
