Where to Set Your Heart

Psalm 62:10b “Though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them.”

My heart – my will, affection, attention – is in the right place when it’s set on God and his continuous provision, not on my financial assets. Do I hold onto my finances with a white-knuckled grip? Or do I give generously and go above and beyond when I encounter an unexpected need? Is my happiness determined by how much money I have and by the latest thing I’ve bought? Or am I happy and content with less? And do I remain untroubled during times of uncertainty because I have truly set my heart on God?

Father, over the decades I have indeed seen my savings increase despite ups and downs in the stock market and, for a period of many years, a flat paycheck. But you are the source and my constant provider. Let me never forget that. I trust and abide in you.
