Wealth, Honor, Life

Proverbs 22:4 “Humility and the fear of the Lord bring wealth and honor and life.”

Having financial means, a good reputation, and a full, happy life are very good things. But the only valid path to these benefits comes by humbling myself before God and by pursuing him, not by pursuing the things themselves. Like so much in the walk of a Christian, this is counterintuitive. Instead of pouring all my energy and focus into my own goals and achievements, I must make choices to put God’s objectives first. And I must not attempt to exalt myself, but rather to walk in humility.

Father, my job presents many dangers – to act in my own self-interest, to be led by my ego, and to get into the drama, fear, and ambition that comes from working within any hierarchy. Please protect me, from myself and from the ambitions, fears, and misunderstandings of others. Make me a vibrant witness, joyfully communicating your true life in word and action today.
