True Financial Freedom

Hebrews 13:5-6 “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’ So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?’”

This is true financial freedom. I can live without the tyranny of things, status, and wealth. I can be content with what I have, because of God’s promise to me. At the root of much status-climbing, hoarding, overwork, and self-protectiveness is fear. At one time, I acted as though it would be careless and even poor stewardship to merely trust God financially. This was a subtle self-deception and rooted in my inadequate understanding of God’s love for me. Somehow in that 2006 week at JH Ranch with my son, Philip, my understanding of and joy in God’s love became clearer, more personal, and no longer performance-based. I have since found the peace and contentment of trusting God for financial needs in a way that is far more confident in his provision, no matter the circumstances.

Father, you have always provided, over and above anything I could have asked or imagined. I’m sorry for the times when I’ve been stressed about money instead of praying and trusting more. Thank you for decades filled with examples of your generosity toward me and my family, always meeting our needs and often lavishing us with so much more. May we use it all for your glory.
