Humility Before Honor

Proverbs 18:12 “Before destruction a man’s heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor.”

Why are we tempted to think haughtiness, self-promotion, and status-climbing will lead to something good, will somehow fill the empty holes in our lives and salve our wounds? Try to find a joyful, content, and satisfied person who got there through being arrogant and self-important. In fact, it’s hard to find a person who is “successful” in worldly ways who has not left a trail of destruction – broken promises, broken families, broken marriages, broken health – in his wake. As a Christian, I must get off that path. I must walk in humility – not thinking less of myself, but thinking of myself a lot less. If God desires it, he will bestow honor. But the goal is God, not honor for myself.

Father, I desire to please you today by walking in humility. Help me listen to my fellow workers and to have patience and understanding that only comes when I recognize I don’t have all the answers. I seek the honor that comes from you alone – that of a good life of purpose and fruitfulness. Please be glorified in my actions, words, and attitudes today.

A message to my readers: So far in 2021, the auto-posting feature of my blog has been inconsistent when connecting with Facebook and LinkedIn, requiring that I manually post on those social media sites. It’s not a sustainable way to run a daily blog. So, this will be my last week posting to Facebook and LinkedIn. I will continue to post on faithworkandlife.com and email subscribers. If you are a reader on Facebook or LinkedIn but are not yet receiving posts in your inbox, please make sure to subscribe (it’s free) so you can continue to receive these posts beyond the end of January.
