Proverbs 16:5 “The Lord detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: they will not go unpunished.”
Proverbs 16:8 “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”
The greatest of angels, Lucifer, swelled with pride and lusted for his own glory. He took credit for what the Creator gave him. Then he turned against the One who made him, attempting in his infinite foolishness to overthrow God. Failing utterly, Satan now works to steal, kill, and destroy all that is good, aiming his fiercest weapons of hatred at human beings. No wonder God detests all the proud of heart because in their haughtiness they emulate Satan. Their destiny is punishment, self-destruction, ruinous fall. But with humility comes wisdom (Proverbs 11:2).
Father, please keep me from pride and a haughty, self-congratulatory spirit. I want to be more like Jesus Christ, taking the nature of a servant, doing nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit (Philippians 2).
