Boast in God, Not Yourself

Psalm 44:6-8 “I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory; but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame. In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever.”

This is God-confidence, not self-confidence. My own skills, talents, experiences, wits, money, and connections are not where to place my trust. These may be good things, but ultimately they will fail me. But God never fails. He loves me and desires that I trust him, walking in dependence upon him and bringing him praise.

Note: Meditating on this psalm, I wrote a prayer in my journal in 2016 pleading with God to heal my daughter after an ablation surgery which failed to stabilize her heart rhythms. In the recovery room after a second heart surgery in 2017, I witnessed a miracle: Abbie’s wildly erratic heartbeats (only 60% of them effective) had been transformed into a perfect, textbook waveform on the EKG screen. This was the result of surgical excellence and the many prayers of friends and family. Abbie and her husband, Joe, have become parents twice since then. Both pregnancies would have been high risk before that second heart surgery, but the health of Abbie’s heart is no longer a concern. Thank you, God!
