Awe and Money

Psalm 49:16 “Do not be overawed when a man grows rich.”

The tendency of many human beings is to ascribe wisdom to those who are wealthy, even if no wisdom is evident in their words, actions, or relationships. The rich and “successful” are held in awe; business magazines laud them for the moment; people listen to them as they pontificate about issues very distant from their areas of expertise. Fawning crowds are blinded by their wealth and lose sight of God.

Father, keep me from a focus on money or an awe of those who have the gifts to start a business, take wild financial risks, and multiply their wealth. I desire to follow you on the path you have laid out for me and among the people you want me to serve, learn from, and work alongside – wherever that takes me, I will keep my eyes on you.
