Excellence and Craftsmanship

Proverbs 22:29 “Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men.”

This proverb is about skill development, discipline, and craftsmanship, about pursuing excellence in my work and producing products and services characterized by quality and usefulness. I like to think that the tent-making apostle, Paul, did not thoughtlessly produce his product but crafted tents of high quality and durability that were sought after by his customers. Such tents would be consistent with the integrity of a man of God. Excellent work may remain in obscurity for a long time – which is one way God develops character and teaches us to depend on him – but eventually, in God’s timing, the excellence will be noticed and rewarded in some way. But, I must be careful. This proverb is not about self-promotion or striving to get ahead of others or making it about me. It is about the skill that produces value, jobs for others, and even elegance and beauty.

Father, thank you for a job that gives me the opportunity to hone a range of skills while driving for excellence. Thank you for the daily challenges I face and for giving me ability to think and draw from experience and the help of others to overcome those challenges. All the ideas and skills ultimately come from you. Please help me to steward them well, honoring you every day in my workplace.
