Tomorrow

Proverbs 27:1 “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.”

Each day has its own purpose. Often what a day brings forth is a surprise of some kind, and that surprise may upset my best laid and most confident plans. How I react reveals much about my relationship with God. Only God knows the future. One of the ways he gets my attention and teaches me is to disrupt my plans and make my boasts empty. I can think back to several of my own confident (self-confident) plans that God interrupted and rendered moot in my career. And even some of my pursuits not rooted in selfish or self-referential desires did not turn out as planned. But each of these was – and is – an opportunity to trust God, grow in the faith, and continue to seek him.

Father, I desire what you desire for this day. Please take my plans and reorient them as you wish. Keep me from boasting or dishonoring you in any way.
