The Inadequacy of a Horse

Psalm 20:7-8 “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm.”

The man who trusts in God stands firm. No amount of talent, experience, connections, or net worth can be trusted in the way that God can be trusted. Fortunes have a way of being obliterated by circumstances, squandered by foolishness, or seized by tyrants. Even if a man’s wealth or accomplishments remain, by their nature they cannot fully satisfy or bring true peace, joy, and meaning to his life. These truths have been proven repeatedly for as long as humans have been on the earth.

Father, I don’t want to trust in my net worth or my retirement fund. I want to trust in you. As this country heaps up mountains of debt and looks for solutions by increasing government power, I need not fear but must continue to trust you. You took care of my grandfather when socialism swept Hungary and took all that he had worked to build. Yet he and his family could speak of your blessings and faithfulness which last to this very day, long after socialism was proven a failure and defeated in that nation.
