God and Human Authority

1 Peter 2:13-17 “Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men … For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men … Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.”

We who are Jesus Christ’s are freer than anyone else on earth. But we still live with obligations and responsibilities as employees, church members, citizens, family members. As such I must never use my freedom as a cover-up for evil (1 Peter 2:16). In every case, where submitting myself to a human authority does not violate my obedience to God, I must submit. This means paying my taxes honestly, obeying laws, working diligently at my job, giving respect, and praying for those in authority. Doing these things honors God because it is his will to silence the ignorant attacks of foolish people who look for ways to discredit followers of Christ.

Father, as imperfect as America is and has always been, thank you for the freedoms in this country to worship you, to share my faith, to communicate and confront truthfully. Please remind me of the many blessings of these freedoms and please prevent them from being trampled and lost. Bring repentance and salvation across this land – and the whole earth. Show us your glory, Lord!
