Take Pains to Be Above Reproach

2 Corinthians 8:21 “For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of men.”

The context for Paul’s words here is that he wants to honor God in the manner in which he and his fellow travelers distribute a large financial gift intended to help people in need. It is about stewardship and responsibility, not only for acting in a way that honors God but also in a way that is recognized as right in the eyes of men, i.e., to be above reproach. Motives can be misinterpreted, but honest misunderstandings can be counteracted by taking pains to do what is right.

Father, please use me today. I may be walking into controversy and situations that will be readily misinterpreted. Please remind me every moment to take pains to do what is right, to act out of your love, to listen more than I speak, to hold to truth, to give grace. I am yours, use me any way you desire.
