You Think You’re Really Something?

Galatians 6:3-4 “If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself without comparing himself to somebody else.”

All too often, the temptation is to find someone who has messed up (6:1) and make that person a reference point to puff myself up. I think I am someone to be admired, a better person than the one I’m comparing myself with. But the truth is that everyone is desperate, hopelessly doomed, and a perpetual sinner apart from Jesus Christ. Any righteous acts that I do, any motivations that please God and make a difference in another life are all because of Christ’s forgiveness, love, and indwelling Spirit.

Father, if left to myself and my own pretenses I would never, ever be able to please and honor and serve and delight in you. Show me where my actions betray you or where I’m making foolish comparisons in my attempts to feel superior. I am nothing apart from you.
