Weakness That Is Strength

2 Corinthians 12:10 “That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

The context of this verse is Paul’s “thorn in the flesh” that he explains was given to him “to keep me from being conceited” (2 Cor. 12:7). Just as God gave Paul education, wisdom, and leadership skills along with a brilliant mind, so God also gave Paul weaknesses along with insults, hardships, persecutions, and difficulties. The latter reminded Paul that he was ultimately not in control. This is counterintuitive: when I am weak, then I am strong. But when I am aware of my weaknesses, I stop relying only on myself and my own wits, and begin to fully depend on God.

Father, thank you for all the challenges of the workplace over the years, where you have humbled me and taught me to depend on you as I’ve worked under many different managers, some good, some bad. Please keep me from thinking that I am the master of my fate or that it’s all about me. Guide me and use me in the circle of people you have called me to work with today.
