What Am I Focused On?

Proverbs 28:20 “A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.”

Do not be eager to get rich. Period. Instead, be eager to be faithful. Faithfulness requires that I persevere and follow through on my commitments, and that I make daily, hourly, moment-by-moment choices to follow God’s leading instead of the path that seems convenient or self-gratifying. To focus on getting rich is to invite all kinds of foolishness and heartache into my life. It is the same for any pursuit that distracts from Christ. If I find myself veering in such a direction I need to stop and ask myself why. What need am I trying to fill? And I must consider how such foolish pursuits end (never well).

Father, please show me today how you want me to apply this proverb, whether being called by you to give rebuke to another or receiving rebuke and valuing it as a prompt for change in my life. I need your courage and grace for both.
