Obvious, Miserable, and Ugly

Galatians 5:19-20 “The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: … hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, envy.”

These miserable attitudes and behaviors are the result of trying to gratify selfish, sinful desires (5:16) rather than living by God’s Spirit (5:16-17). Why indulge in things that produce such ugliness? I have seen it often over many years in the workplace, even in the actions and attitudes of some high-ranking Christians. Far better not to attain status or rank. Rather, I must exchange those worldly enticements for real communion with God and the fruit of his Spirit in my life: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Father, please fill me with your Spirit and produce fruit in my life today. I am Christ’s and have crucified my sinful nature (5:24). My desire is to be governed by your Spirit in all thoughts, decisions, and actions. This is a struggle, but with your strength I know it is possible.
