Anthill Wisdom

Proverbs 6:6-8 “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.”

This is a strong exhortation to plan ahead, especially with regard to financial considerations. The lowly ant demonstrates diligence. Saving for the future instead of spending everything is practical, life-giving wisdom. Laziness about one’s job or sloppiness about one’s finances leads to poverty and scarcity (6:9-11). This is commonsense instruction, but unfortunately too easily ignored in our society by both individuals and by governments which propagate foolish disincentives against work and saving.

Father, may the rampant debt and financial lunacy of our age bring people to the end of relying on themselves and on an ever-increasing government. Instead, I ask that you use personal financial crises and helplessness to bring lost souls to faith in Jesus Christ. Show us our sin and need for the Savior.
