How to Use Your Freedom

Galatians 5:13 “You … were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge in the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.”

The conflict is between self-indulgence and serving others. This passage is largely a rebuke of legalism, which indulges the sinful nature as much as hedonism does. These evils get us focused on ourselves. And legalism especially has that element of “biting and devouring each other” (5:15) that ultimately destroys relationships, families, churches, and communities. In the same way, it is tempting to indulge in self-promotion, careerism, arrogance, and pride while couching my behaviors in the acceptable vocabulary of hard work, drive, providing for the family, etc.

Father, please continue to show me where I am indulging the sinful nature and not loving my neighbor as myself. Please change me. Renew and transform my mind regarding everyone in my neighborhood, my co-workers, the vagrants and troublemakers in the streets around my office, and all others who cross my path. Here I am, send me.
