How to Think of Myself

Romans 12:3 “Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment.”

This is a new way of thinking, a renewal of the mind. All change begins with thinking differently about something, in this case how I think about myself. Thinking of myself with sober judgment means that I unflinchingly look at the truth about my attitudes and behaviors. I am no longer blinded by attempts to justify myself and to make excuses. As a result, I begin to transform into greater obedience and attentiveness to God’s perfect will, putting the unique mix of gifts and experiences God has given me into action for his glory, not my own (Rom. 12:4-8).

Father, you know my heart and my many tendencies toward self-honoring, self-centered thinking. Please continue your work of renewing my thoughts today. Don’t let me regard myself too highly, but give me sober, truthful judgment. And wherever I observe sinful attitudes and foolishness in myself, please cleanse me and give me the joy of using your gifts unimpeded.
