Calamity

Proverbs 24:16 “For though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again, but the wicked are brought down by calamity.”

The righteous aren’t immune to setbacks, but God raises them up again. Tragedy, calamity, disappointment, unrealized expectations, loss – they are all part of life on this earth. But those who trust in the Lord and follow him have resilience. It’s a resilience that comes from God’s Holy Spirit. Those who trust in themselves and continually scheme and plot for selfish advantage often cannot weather storms. They rage and lash out as calamity brings them down. But the crisis that brings them low may be exactly what they need to finally open up to God’s love.

Father, thank you that you have allowed me to experience multiple setbacks, career disappointments, bad bosses, tedious assignments, difficult co-workers, and unfulfilled innovations over the years. Though these have not been the norm, they have occurred often enough to reveal the pattern: you’ve let me fall, then raised me up again, never letting me be permanently crushed, but always restoring me while revealing more about your purposes for my life. For all of that, I am grateful.
