The Still and Quiet Soul

Psalm 131:1-3 “My heart is not proud, O Lord, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me. But I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me. O Israel, put your hope in the Lord both now and forevermore.”

This little Psalm of only three verses is humble and small in both its length and its simple words. It contains the ultimate imagery of dependence – a weaned child held close to his mother, stilled and quieted, unaware of self, content and safe. This beautifully depicts what Jesus describes in Matthew 18:3-4 “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Jesus invited his disciples to consider the dependence of a small child in response to their self-centered question about who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. God wants me to stop trying to gain prominence, stop being proud and great in my own eyes. He wants me to put my hope in him, not in myself.

Father, I desire to rest in you, stilled and quieted in my soul, putting all my hope in your love. I want to depend on you today, moment by moment, so that you are glorified in me.
